What clinical placements require, and why RNs are outside it
Every clinical NP rotation on this board requires the preceptor to hold national board certification matching the population the student is entering, an advanced practice credential the program treats as equivalent to what its own student is working toward. An RN without that specific certification cannot be matched to a clinical placement here, whatever their years of bedside experience.
This is not a judgment on the value of RN experience. It is simply outside what a clinical rotation is built to evaluate, since the student's program needs a preceptor who already holds the certification the student is working toward. Years on a unit, however senior, do not substitute for that credential on a program's placement paperwork.
What is actually open: education and leadership practica
RNs holding an MSN or higher, presently teaching or managing in an active capacity, can precept MSN students completing an education or leadership practicum. This is not clinical hours. A student in an education track might shadow how you build a course, run a simulation lab session or evaluate a cohort; a student in a leadership track might sit in on staffing decisions, budget meetings or a quality improvement project.
The eligibility bar is your current role, not your job title alone. A management title with no active management duties, or a teaching credential with no current teaching assignment, generally will not clear a program's placement review.
What an education or leadership practicum day looks like
There is no patient in the room to structure the hours around, so the student's log tracks meetings, planning sessions and the work product they helped produce instead. A leadership student might attend a full week of the meetings you already have on your calendar, taking notes on how a decision got made rather than making the decision themselves.
An education student is closer to an apprentice teacher: watching how you handle a difficult question in a lecture or lab, then taking a smaller piece of the session themselves as the term goes on. Either way, the hours are logged the same way a clinical block is, against the same 120-hour standard.
The straight answer for a BSN or ADN RN
If you hold a BSN or ADN and do not hold an MSN, there is no placement on this board for you, clinical or otherwise, and no version of the application that changes that. Unit preceptorship, training a newly hired nurse on your own floor, is real precepting work and it is common, but it runs through your employer's own orientation program, not through an academic affiliation agreement, and it is paid, if at all, as part of your regular employment rather than as a per-student-hour placement.
If unit-level precepting interests you, ask your nurse manager or professional development office how your facility structures it. That is a genuinely different arrangement from anything on this board and is worth pursuing on its own terms rather than waiting on an opening here that will not appear.
If you are considering going back for an MSN
An MSN paired with an active teaching or management position opens the practicum route already described; an MSN that leads instead to an NP or other advanced practice credential opens every clinical population this board lists, once you hold the certification and the two years of practice most programs require. Neither path is quick, and neither should be started on the expectation of a placement waiting at the end of it.
Talk to your own program before you enroll about what kind of role you would need to hold afterward for a practicum placement to be realistic. A degree finished while you are already working in a teaching or management capacity clears the bar faster than one finished with a plan to change roles later.
Pay for an education or leadership placement
The pay structure does not change by population. You pick a figure anywhere from $12 to $20 for each logged hour, and a full 120-hour practicum is worth $1,440 to $2,400, split evenly between your midpoint sign-off and your closing evaluation. Come January, a 1099-NEC follows once your yearly earnings cross $600, exactly as it would for any clinical placement on this board.
