You name the figure
There is one dollar field on your preferences page. Put any number from $12 to $20 in it and it travels with every card you are shown afterwards. Nobody haggles it down. Programs are quoted a total for a placement rather than a price list of clinicians, so naming the top of the band does not push you down a queue.
Change it whenever you like. The new figure applies to placements you accept from that day on, while anything you have already accepted keeps the number it carried when you said yes.
What one opening is worth
Multiply 120 by your figure and you have the fee for a standard opening. Sixty hours is a half-opening and pays half. Three openings inside one calendar year comes to 360 student hours, which is roughly where a clinician taking one student per term ends up.

How it reaches you
Two direct deposits, no invoice to raise. The first is released when you sign the midpoint evaluation and the second when you sign the final. The fee follows the hours the program's log records, so a placement that closes early pays for what was completed, and supervised hours a student forgot to enter are hours the coordinator helps them recover.
What January brings
These fees are contractor income. A 1099-NEC is issued once your year with the network reaches $600, and nothing has been withheld along the way, so many preceptors put aside about a third and ask a preparer whether quarterly estimates are due. A handful of states run their own preceptor tax credit, and several of those are written for uncompensated precepting only, meaning a paid opening can rule the credit out. Ask a preparer rather than assuming you get both.
The parts that are free
Applying, being listed, being matched, sitting the orientation and being paid all cost nothing. No percentage is taken off a block. Programs and their students carry the cost of placement, which is the whole reason this side of it is free.
