120 student hours divided across a 14 week term is a little over eight and a half hours a week. Divided across a 16 week term it drops closer to seven and a half. Most schools land somewhere in between, which is the arithmetic behind the common shorthand that a preceptor job amounts to a single weekly clinic day for the length of a term.
A single eight or nine hour day is easier to protect on a calendar than the same hours scattered across a week in ninety minute pieces, which is why almost nobody splits a block that way. Choose the weekday where you are least likely to get pulled onto something else, because a student who shows up to find you covering someone else's patients that morning logs nothing useful.
If your clinic runs ten hour days, the block finishes in twelve or thirteen visits instead of fifteen. The total hours a program requires do not change; only how few days it takes to reach them does.
The half-block, for a schedule that cannot carry a full one
A half-block is 60 student hours, half the commitment and half the pay. At $12 to $20 a student hour that is $720 to $1,200 for the whole placement, paid the same way a full block is: half when you sign off at the midpoint, half when you sign off at the end. Some programs run half-blocks as a standard shorter rotation; others will only agree to one if a full block genuinely does not fit your calendar.
Sixty hours across a 14 to 16 week term works out to roughly four hours a week, so many preceptors take a half-block as a single half day rather than a full clinic day. That keeps the rest of the week completely untouched, at the cost of finishing the placement slower in real time even though the hour count is smaller.
Fitting a block beside a full-time post
The affiliation agreement that makes a placement possible names the student's program and your practice as the two signing parties, not you as an individual. Your employer has to know and has to sign, but nothing in the agreement asks you to change your employment status, reduce your hours, or give up your regular patients.
The one clinic day you give a student is a day you were already going to work. What changes is the pace of that day, not the number of days on your calendar. A preceptor with a full-time clinical post and a part-time preceptor placement is still, on paper, working exactly one job.
Why one student at a time is the practical cap
Taking on a second student in the same block does not double your pay for the same hours, because each student still needs to be observed, corrected and countersigned individually. Running two learners through the same patient load at once usually means both get a thinner rotation than one would have gotten alone.
Program calendars also cluster around the same few start dates each year, so two placements you agreed to separately can easily land on top of each other without warning. Preceptors who take one student at a time avoid that collision entirely and can say yes to the next opening as soon as the current one clears its final evaluation.
When a part-time block genuinely does not fit
If your schedule cannot reliably protect the same day or half day for 14 to 16 straight weeks, say so before you agree to a placement rather than partway through it. A block that gets interrupted every few weeks by call, travel or a shift swap is harder on the student's log than an honest no at the start.
